FIS 14000 HW 2. Due Sept 21st.. There are three pages of images, 75 in all. As you work your way through the images, please fill out the form beside them. When you finish all 26 images on a page, click the submit button on the form and go to the next page.
In order for a fingerprint examiner to match a fingermark there must be sufficient detail present for comparison. You are not being called upon to “match” the fingerprints you will be shown in sets 1, 2 and 3. Rather, you are being asked to evaluate the fingerprints on a scale of 0-4 based on how much detail is present. Examples are given below.
4 = Excellent: Complete ridge detail, no smudging or substantial defect.
A rating of 4 means that there is strong detail present and no substantial smudging or defect. This does not mean that there is no blurs or smudges anywhere on the print, only that any defects are insignificant, that is to say not covering a large amount of detail. Likewise, on most fingerprints there will be some voids because the deposited fingerprint is incomplete. However for Good or Excellent fingerprints these voids should be small and most of the print should be present.
Please remember that the visualization of the detail is relative to the method being used. (Set 1) Carbon Black and (Set 3) Cyanoacrylate leave a positive image. The ridge detail is the colored portion. The Axis Inversion Prints (Set 2) leave a negative image. The detail is in clear portions and the background is colored.
3 = Good: Ridge detail visible but weak or faint. No substantial smudging or defect
These are similar to Rank 4 Fingerprints except that the detail is lighter and harder to see.
2 = Fair: Difficult to see ridge detail, no substantial smudging or defect
For rank 2 pints the detail is present but may require electronic enhancement to special lighting to make out or fully analyze.
1 = Poor:Poor samples will have substantial missing or obliterated detail. There may be some areas that are readable, but most of the fingerprint will be unusual.
0 = Unusable: No parts of the sample have clear, useable detail.
Remember that the images are being viewed over the internet and due to resolution issues will not tend to be able to be blown up. So, please go throug the images below and try ranking each image. After each image, a score will be given to demonstrate how the images should be ranked. Then once you have seen how the prints are to be ranked, please follow the buttons below or the menue at the side to go to sets 1, 2 and 3. After you score each set, please submit the form and move on to the next set.
If you are not going to complete the set in one siting, then you will have to take notes becasue the form will not save once you have left the page.
